Request for Co-sponsors: Resolution Against Unjust Foreign Detentions

Why so strongly focus on a Trump impeachment? In the case he is impeached do you guys think the next in line, who in this case is JD Vance would just stop this trajectory? I imagine they would double down. I get wanting to take a shot at the top dog, but focusing on Trump is missing the point completely. The resolution condemning and calling for removal of all government officials carries more weight. This issue is not isolated to Trump this is wide spread corruption and a resolution on a Trump impeachment is nothing but show. A well crafted resolution based on our statement of principles and platform condemning everyone that is complicit in the violation of human rights or the inaction to resolve the situation give us a stronger stance in the end.

If we just want clippable news stories that gain short term attention then fade faster than a firework pass the Trump impeachment resolution. At the end of the day we are an organization that has the goal of being a viable alternative to the two party system which means we need to separate ourselves from them, and to be frank human rights violations through the flawed immigration system has been present for every administration in my lifetime.

We could easily pass BOTH resolutions under the idea that, while Trump started this authoritarian shitshow and we fully back LP Travis County's intent, our second resolution expands our opposition to all who would aid Trump in his tyrannical effort. If we vote down the Travis County resolution, we will be perceived by some to have either opposed it, or at the least been unwilling to call out Trump specifically.

Fwiw:
I think the first resolution was too focused on Trump to the exclusion of the other complicit tyrants.

I think the second resolution is too general, thus giving some the impression that it is not "strong" enough.

I voted in favor of both.

I would have liked to have seen a combination of the two and to have seen them test floated by a few of our candidates who are not on this body. But I have not had the time to lend a hand to achieve this, so what I would like is irrelevant. This is what we have. Besides, I doubt anything I would have had a hand in helping create would have achieved a majority vote anyway given that I find no rebuke of tyranny nor of its champions to be complete without language such as "sic semper tyrannis". Without a clear willingness to wheel in the guillotines, we are only wagging fingers anyway. As such, we should do so with our goals in mind, whatever we define those goals to be. I don't think the second one would have drawn the eye of Newsweek, and I fear passing it without also passing the Travis County resolution could do more harm than good.

Resolutions are not lasting. They are expression of the opinion of the body. They have no binding effect. They are similar to that of a press release. Their purpose is applying principles to current events and let everyone know. They are a flash in the pan. We already have platform planks that express this opinion in a more lasting medium but broader way.

Is comms going to publish this to the news section of the website and to social media or is this going to be another meaningless resolution that we pass that never gets posted anywhere?

Easy, tiger.

I've written up a press release. Andrew got me a quote for it this morning. Once I have it all formatted, I'll either be sending it to Comms to publish or asking them to show me how.
Thanks, was just worried after looking back at this and not seeing direction on how to publish this. I know from past involvement with resolutions if there is no direction the chair and comms has been known to ignore it.

The press release got sent out today with whatever service the Comms department uses. I have alerts set up for every version of LPTexas I could think of, so if we get something out of it, I should hear about it. 🤞🤞
